Risk To Global Economy – China’s Real Estate Bubble About To Burst

Two years after the U.S. subprime crisis, China is seeing its own real estate bubble as a result of massive state stimulus programs. Many economists are warning it could burst soon, with unpredictable results for the global economy.

An interminable sawing, screeching, drilling and hammering rips through the oppressive summer heat and humidity in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin. Here, on the city’s dusty outskirts, hundreds of new apartment buildings and houses in every imaginable style are springing up.

In an air-conditioned showroom, salespeople in yellow uniforms take potential buyers on tours of the facility. «In one year, we already sold 90 percent of North America, Asia and Europe,» customer consultant Qi Yunbu says proudly. «Now we’re preparing Africa, Oceania and South America for sale.»

«Xingyao Wuzhou,» loosely translated as «Shining Star over Five Continents,» is the name of this Chinese blend of Dubai and Disneyland, a €2.3 billion ($3 billion) development designed to imitate the world map. The gigantic residential and leisure complex is being built around and within an artificial lake.

The developers apparently want to make sure that the residents of this aquatic paradise will lack for nothing. The plans include the world’s largest indoor ski center, golf courses, a seven-star hotel, the world’s largest musical fountain and miniature replicas of famous structures like the Tower Bridge in London and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

Αν απαντήσετε το δεύτερο, είσαστε συνωμοσιολόγος. Αν απαντήσετε το πρώτο, είσαστε καλός υπάκουος και ευνομούμενος πολίτης. Τέτοιους μας θέλουν εξ άλλου. Όχι περιττές σκέψεις, βρε αδερφέ…

Άλλο παράδειγμα: Στον πόλεμο του Ιράκ, τόσο ο τότε πρόεδρος Μπους, όσο και ο τότε πρωθυπουργός της Βρετανίας ξέσκιζαν τα ιμάτιά τους και υποστήριζαν ότι ο πόλεμος επείγει, επειδή το Σαντάμ Χουσεΐν διέθετε όπλα μαζικής καταστροφής.

Τους είχατε πιστέψει; Παρόλο που η άποψη αυτή είχε έντονα αμφισβητηθεί όχι μόνο επίσημα από αξιωματούχους αμερικανικών υπηρεσιών που έκαναν επιτόπου επιθεωρήσεις, ο πόλεμος έγινε, ο Σαντάμ εκτελέστηκε και το Ιράκ βρίσκεται υπό αμερικανική κατοχή.

Μέσα σε διάστημα λίγων εβδομάδων, δύο ένθετα του ελληνικού Τύπου ασχολήθηκαν με την «Συνωμοσιολογία»!

Η απάτη των εξετάσεων αντοχής (stress tests)

Άλλη μία φθηνή θεατρική ολοκληρώθηκε αλλά με αμφιλεγόμενες κριτικές και αποδοχή. Οι εξετάσεις αντοχής που έκανε η ΕΕ σε 91 τράπεζες ολοκληρώθηκαν με περιφανή αποτελέσματα. Είναι γελοίο όλοι όσοι διατείνονται ότι η κρίση είναι απλά χρηματοπιστωτική ξαφνικά, με μάλλον αμφίβολες και μικρές προσπάθειες, να υποστηρίζουν ότι ο χρηματοπιστωτικός τομέας χαίρει περίπου άκρας υγείας.

Βέβαια μία σειρά αναλυτές και των επίσημων μέσων ενημέρωσης έχουν ήδη δείξει την απάτη του εγχειρήματος. Πιο χαρακτηριστική είναι η ανάλυση του W. Munchau στους σημερινούς Financial Times με τίτλο «Μία εξέταση που ρυθμίσθηκε κυνικά για να κατασκευάσει το αποτέλεσμα» (A test cynically calibrated to fix the result). Ο Munchau παραθέτει τρεις βασικούς λόγους για τους οποίους οι εξετάσεις αυτές είναι «σικέ»:

Η  αξία των ανεκμετάλλευτων αποθεμάτων σιδήρου, χαλκού, κοβαλτίου, λιθίου, νιοβίου, χρυσού και υδραργύρου που βρίσκονται στο υπέδαφος του Αφγανιστάν, υπολογίζεται  σε ένα τρισεκατομμύριο δολάρια.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s comments follow the deaths of eleven soldiers and 12 PKK guerrillas during a battle in Hakkari

Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said today that Kurdish militants would «drown in their own blood» as he led political and army chiefs in paying his respects to troops killed in a clash with the rebels during fighting on Saturday. Eleven soldiers and 12 Kurdistan Workers’ party (PKK) guerrillas died in the south-eastern province of Hakkari, near the Iraq border.

At a ceremony in the city of Van, Erdogan said: «I say here very clearly, they will not win. They will gain nothing. They will melt away in their own darkness … they will drown in their own blood.» The death toll in Saturday’s clash was one of the highest in recent years in a conflict which has killed more than 40,000 since the PKK took up arms against the state in 1984 with the aim of creating a homeland in the south-east.

Separatist violence generally increases in south-east Turkey in the spring as the guerrillas cross the border from Iraq and there has been a notable escalation in the last two months.

More than one thousand EU officials earn more than the Prime Minister, according to research carried out by the The Daily Telegraph.

It shows that 1,023 Eurocrats pocket bigger salaries than David Cameron’s annual income of £142,500.

Included in the overall total are Herman Van Rompuy, the EU president, Baroness Ashton, Europe’s foreign minister, José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President along with six vice-presidents and 19 commissioners.

This group of 28 people, who are all unelected, earn £57,000 to £103,000 more than Mr Cameron and include the three best paid politicians, Mr Van Rompuy, Mr Barroso and Lady Ashton, in the western world.

Among the 995 European civil servants, who are on the AD14 to AD16 grades earning £146,267 to £179,703, are at least 90 unelected British EU officials earning more than the Prime Minister.

Blackwater Firm Gets $120M U.S. Gov’t Contract

CBS News has learned in an exclusive report that the State Department has awarded a part of what was formerly known as Blackwater Worldwide a contract worth more than $120 million for providing security services in Afghanistan.

Private security firm U.S. Training Center, a business unit of the Moyock, N.C.-based Blackwater, now called Xe Services, was awarded the contract Friday, a State Department spokeswoman said Friday night.

Under the contract, U.S. Training Center will provide «protective security services» at the new U.S. consulates in Herat and Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, the spokeswoman said. The firm can begin work «immediately» and has to start within two months. The contract lasts a year but can be extended twice for three months at a time to last a maximum of 18 months.

Should the firm fulfill all 18 months available in the contract, it will be paid a total of $120,123,293, the spokeswoman said.
